Description: Gastornis (Gastornis geiselensis) was one of the largest animals around at the time. "Gaston's bird" is named after Gaston Planti, who found the first remains. Birds are now generally considered to be all that remains of the once much more diverse dinosaurs. And this huge, heavily built bird certainly looks like a worthy descendant. Its bones show it was very sturdily built and had an incredibly powerful hatchet-like beak. There has been debate about what it used its enormous beak for. Some say it was for cracking nuts; another theory suggests it used the beak to crush bones. Given its huge size, Gastornis must have been a silent ambush hunter in the thick forests. Gastornis lived on the forest floor in the great expanses of rainforest which covered the land in the Eocene.

Gastornis (Gastornis geiselensis) was one of the largest animals around at the
time.  "Gaston's bird" is named after Gaston Planti, who found the first
remains.  Birds are now generally considered to be all that remains of the
once much more diverse dinosaurs.  And this huge, heavily built bird certainly
looks like a worthy descendant.  Its bones show it was very sturdily built and
had an incredibly powerful hatchet-like beak.  There has been debate about
what it used its enormous beak for.  Some say it was for cracking nuts;
another theory suggests it used the beak to crush bones.  Given its huge size,
Gastornis must have been a silent ambush hunter in the thick forests.
Gastornis lived on the forest floor in the great expanses of rainforest which
covered the land in the Eocene.
