Northern Fur Seal
The northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) is a member of the family
Otariidae, or eared seals. Two physical traits they have in common with sea
lions are their tightly rolled external ears and their ability to rotate their
hind flippers forward. This latter characteristic enables them to run or climb
on land, an ability helpful to Aleut hunters who sometimes drive them several
hundred yards inland to harvesting sites.
