Animal Type: elephant
African Elephant
The native habitat of the elephant is the open savannah of central and
southern Africa. In the wild, elephants occupy a wide geographic range, often
traveling many miles in a single day. In captivity, elephants need relatively
large spaces in which to live and move about. The more elephants, the more
space they need. Elephants are generally found in regions containing wide
swaths of tall grasses broken by the occasional stands of acacias and the
large African baobab tree, which the elephants like to use for shade. Areas of
dirt and sand near waterholes form cool mud holes for the elephants to wallow
in, and the occasional large rock provides a perfect scratching post for
removing dried mud.

Animal Type: warthog
African Warthog
The African warthog is the only pig adapted for grazing on the African
savannah. They get their name from the prominent warts on their faces. The
warthog is slimmer than other hogs, with a level back and comparatively long
limbs. They have scattered bristles, whiskers, and a mane of long hair. Both
the boar and the sow have tusks, although the tusks on the boar are longer and
much more prominent. The eyes of this animal are located high on their faces,
enabling them to spy predators from quite a distance.

American Bighorn Sheep
American bighorn sheep possess massive, brown-spiraled horns and beautiful
brown fur. These animals live in the western mountains of North America,
ranging from southern Canada all the way to northern Mexico. Although bighorn
sheep are well-adapted to a range of elevations and temperatures, they prefer
steep, rocky regions and are attracted by open alpine meadows containing a
variety of grasses and succulent, low-growing vegetation. In captivity, the
natural diet of these sheep is supplemented with alfalfa and grain pellets. In
the wild, these animals will eagerly seek out mineral licks containing salt.

Animal Type: bison
American Bison
The American bison, sometimes referred to as the American buffalo, once
comprised the largest community of wild animals in the history of the world.
By one estimate, there were sixty million bison in North America when Columbus
landed. During the late 1800s, millions of these animals were wantonly
slaughtered, bringing them to the verge of extinction. Today, bison live only
in parks and reserves or in privately-owned herds across the United States and
Canada. Bison herds today usually contain about 60 individuals: a mix of cows,
calves, and young adults. Adult males range singly or in smaller groups.

Asian Elephant
The Asian elephant differs from its cousin, the African elephant, in several
ways. Asian elephants are smaller, with males reaching up to 20 feet in
length, 10 feet in height, and 12,000 lbs. in weight. They have smaller ears,
more rounded backs, smoother skin, and an extra toenail on each foot. Their
heads have two domes, rather than one, and only the males grow large tusks.
The ends of their trunks also differ; whereas the African elephant has two
projections, which it can use like fingers to grasp objects, the Asian
elephant has only a single projection, requiring it to curl its trunk around
anything it wants to pick up.

For years, scientists and researchers have searched for Bigfoot, an elusive
primate that has been sighted throughout Canada and the Northwestern United

who named it Sasquatch ("hairy man"). The Sasquatch is thought to be related
to the Yeti of Nepal, and more distantly related to the great apes and other
large primates.

Black Leopard
Melanistic, or black, leopards, also known as black panthers, are not a
separate subspecies of leopard, but rather a color variation within the
species. Black leopards have very dark brown background fur against which
their black spots do not show very well, although they are still visible under
bright light. Among the big cats, the leopard is most likely to produce
melanistic individuals.

Black Rhinoceros
The native habitat of the black rhinoceros is the wide savannah of central and
southern Africa. Black rhinos can be found in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and
Namibia. After the elephant and the hippopotamus, the rhinoceros is the third
largest land creature. The black rhino can stand more than five feet tall and
weigh as much as 4,000 pounds. This species is distinguished by two horns and
a hooked prehensile upper lip. The black rhino's hide is actually gray, but
often looks darker due to a coating of black mud.

Blackbuck
The blackbuck is a delicate and graceful antelope native to the plains of
India and Pakistan. About the size of a large deer, males weigh from 50 to 125
pounds, and females weigh between 60 and 70 pounds. These animals derive their
name from the distinctive dark coloring taken on by dominant males upon
reaching maturity. Females and immature males are fawn-colored. Both genders
have white bellies, white chins, and white rings surrounding their eyes.
Mature males have spiraled horns, averaging 18 inches in length.

Cheetah
Cheetahs are unique cats found today primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, with
small populations also existing in Iran and Russia. The oldest cheetah
fossils, discovered in North America, date from about 4 million years ago.
This animal was common throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America
until about 10,000 years ago, when major climactic changes at the end of the
last Ice Age caused many mammals to die out. Genetically, all cheetahs living
today are as closely related as identical twins, which has led to the theory
that the current cheetah population is descended from a single female and a
few closely related males. This lack of genetic diversity makes the cheetah
particularly vulnerable to disease.

Chimpanzee
Chimps are our closest living relatives. In appearance, they somewhat resemble
monkeys, but lack tails and facial hair. They have long arms with opposable
thumbs and are able to use tools. Chimps are extremely intelligent animals; in
captivity they have been taught to communicate using sign language.
Observations of these animals in their native habitat show that chimpanzees
exhibit culture: different bands of chimps display variations in acquired
skills and habits.

Common Wildebeest
The common wildebeest is a large, bearded antelope found on the savannah
grasslands of central and southern Africa. It is a grazing animal, using its
teeth to take large bites of the short green grass it favors. This preference
for the shorter grasses allows the wildebeest to eat its fill, even when
grazing in close proximity to other species. In captivity, the wildebeest

Dromedary Camel
The dry, arid desert environment of North Africa is home to the dromedary
camel. This harsh and unforgiving terrain is known for its exceedingly high
temperatures, lack of water, and vast empty expanses of sand, broken only by
the occasional stretch of dirt or rocky ground. Camels are well-adapted to the
harsh conditions of their desert habitat and prefer it above all others.
Camels are no longer found in the wild, being completely domesticated. They
are commonly referred to as "the ships of the desert" by the native peoples of
North Africa who use them as beasts of burden.

The northern elephant seal, or Mirounga angustirostris, is the second largest
seal in the world (the southern elephant seal is the largest). An adult male
of the species can grow over 13 feet long and weigh as much as 5,000 pounds.

Emperor Penguin
Emperor penguins are the largest species of penguin, standing 3.7 feet tall
and weighing 60 to 90 pounds. As birds that spend most of their lives at sea,
penguins have traded flight for the ability to swim underwater. Emperor
penguins swim at speeds ranging from five to almost nine miles per hour. They
are terrific divers; dives of up to 1,700 feet in depth and 18 minutes in
length have been recorded.

Animal Type: anteater
Giant Anteater
Giant anteaters are primarily found in the savannahs and grasslands of Central
and South America. These animals are gray with distinctive black and white
markings, and their narrow bodies are about the size of a large dog. Anteaters
are covered in coarse hair, which helps to protect them from insect bites.
Anteaters lack teeth and their jaws can only open half an inch. Their chief
distinguishing characteristic is an extremely long, cylindrical snout, which
the anteater thrusts directly into ant and termite colonies when searching for
food.

Animal Type: panda
Giant Panda
The giant panda is one of the rarest and most critically endangered species in
the world, with probably no more than 1,100 left in the wild. The giant panda
lives in the highlands of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces in southwest
China, at elevations between 5,000 and 10,000 feet. The damp climate supports
dense stands of bamboo, the panda's primary food source. The landscape is
varied, composed of forest floor broken by grass, gray rock, and snow. This
forbidding, inaccessible terrain also offers a defensive advantage for the
panda.

Animal Type: giraffe
Giraffe
Giraffes dwell on the African savannah south of the Sahara Desert. They are
generally found in wooded grassland areas. The word "giraffe" comes from the
Arab word xirapha (zee-RAF-ah), which means "the one that walks very fast."
The Egyptians and Greeks believed that these creatures were a mixture of camel
and leopard, and so called them "camelopards." The giraffe's hide, with its
unique pattern of dark brown spots upon a tan background, provides it with
excellent camouflage against the savannah plain. An individual giraffe's
markings are as unique as a fingerprint.

Animal Type: grizzly
Grizzly Bear
The mighty grizzly bear evolved about one million years ago, probably from the
black bear family. Grizzlies, or brown bears, are one of the largest North
American mammals. In some areas, male grizzlies can reach weights of up to
1,800 pounds, but those found in the lower 48 states do not generally weigh
more than 600 pounds. The grizzly has a hump of muscle on its shoulders and
thick, shaggy fur that is sometimes tipped with silver ends. This fur can be a
variety of colors: black, cinnamon, red, or blond. The grizzly is not a
climber. Instead, their claws are well adapted to digging for food, such as
roots and rodents.

Animal Type: jaguar
Jaguar
The jaguar ranks after the lion and the tiger in size, making it the third
largest cat in the world. In appearance, the jaguar greatly resembles the
leopard, although it is larger and stockier in build, with a shorter tail.
Another way to differentiate between the two species is by the pattern of the
coat: the jaguar's markings consist of dark rings surrounding a lighter area
containing several dark spots. As with leopards, there are also black jaguars.

Javan Rhinoceros
The Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is the rarest of the world's large
mammals. Javan rhinos are very large indeed - up to ten feet long, five feet
high and weighing as much as two tons. Loose folds of dusky gray skin give the
appearance of armor plating. The skin is hairless and consists of polygonal
disks that resemble the scales of a reptile. Although Javan rhinos have small
eyes and poor vision, their wide nostrils and erect ears give them acute
senses of smell and hearing.

Animal Type: lion
Lion
The lion is the largest African carnivore. The native habitat of the lion is
the wide savannah of central and southern Africa. This region's wide swaths of
tall grasses provide excellent coverage for lions on the hunt, and the
occasional tree provides shade for resting lions. The lion spends over 20
hours a day resting, usually in the shade of trees or rocks. However, the lion
is a very athletic cat, capable of impressively long and high leaps. They are
also terrific climbers.

Animal Type: lochness
Loch Ness Monster
The Loch Ness Monster is one of the most famous undiscovered animals in the
world. In Scotland it is fondly known as Nessie. This aquatic animal (or its
ancestors) is said to have lived in Loch Ness, Britain's largest freshwater
lake, for over two thousand years. The earliest evidence of Nessie's existence
are standing stones found in the area of the lake. These stones contain Pict
carvings, dating back to the first century AD. The carvings show a swimming
beast with a serpentine body, long beak, flippers in place of feet, and a long
tail - a creature resembling no known animal. Later, Scottish folklore warned
children that a malevolent water creature might try to lure them into the
depths of the lake with promises of a ride on its back, only to drown the
children once they left shore. The earliest written record of Nessie dates
from 565 AD, when Saint Columba is described as saving a man from a large sea
serpent that had crawled out of the lake.

Lowland Gorilla
Gorillas are the largest primates, weighing up to 400 pounds. There are three
subspecies of gorillas: the eastern lowland gorilla, the western lowland
gorilla, and the mountain gorilla. The eastern lowland gorilla is endangered,
with a population of only 3,000 to 8,000 individuals. Although the western
lowland gorilla is the most numerous of the subspecies, its survival is still
threatened, and only a few hundred mountain gorillas remain. The eastern
lowland gorilla is blacker in color than the mountain gorilla and has shorter
hair, a longer face, and a broader chest than the western lowland gorilla. In
all three subspecies, the male gorillas develop silver backs as they mature.

in mammaldom. These large monkeys have white eyelids, blue cheeks, red noses,
yellow beards, and lilac-colored rumps. Male mandrills are twice the size of
females, ranging between 50 and 90 pounds, and their colorful markings become
much brighter when they reach sexual maturity. Their size and their long
canine teeth make the adult male mandrill the most formidable of any monkey.

Animal Type: moose
Moose
The majestic moose is the largest member of the deer family, measuring up to
7.5 feet in height. They can be found throughout the northern forests of North
America, Europe, and Russia. Male moose (bulls) are much larger than female
moose (cows); a large bull can weigh up to twice as much as a typical cow.
During most of the year, the bull is distinguished by a magnificent set of
antlers, having an average spread of 4 to 5 feet and as many as 30 tines. The
shape of these antlers is unique to the individual. Mature males shed their
antlers once a year in the winter and replace them with larger ones. Other
characteristics of the moose include large muscular shoulders, a "bell" or
dewlap of skin under the chin, a drooping nose, long legs, and a small tail.

Ostrich
The ostrich is the largest living bird. Adult males can stand up to nine feet
tall and weigh up to 345 pounds, while females are somewhat smaller. Males
have black plumage with white wing and tail plumes; females are dull grayish
brown in color. Ostriches have small heads poised on long, mobile necks. Their
bills are broad and flat. Their two-inch panoramic eyes provide these birds
with excellent eyesight. Their eyes are actually larger than their brains.
Ostriches have bare legs and are unique among birds in having only two
forward-pointing toes. Possessing extremely advanced immune systems, mature
ostriches are very robust birds and have a lifespan of about 50 years both in
and out of the wild. Ostriches do very well in captivity.

Animal Type: zebra
Plains Zebra
The plains zebra is one of three migratory animals that dominate the East
African savannah. Large numbers of herd animals travel together in an
established pattern following the rains. Once the grass in an area is
exhausted, they move on. The zebra will often go before their fellow
herbivores, trampling and cropping the taller grasses for those following. In
zoos, zebras are supplied with mineral salt blocks and are fed alfalfa and
grass hay, alfalfa cubes, and mixed pellets.

Przewalski's Wild Horse
In 1879, N.M. Przewalski discovered a species of wild horse on the Asian
steppes. Przewalski's wild horse is the only known surviving species of wild
horse, and an important ancestor to the modern domestic horse. Prehistoric
European cave paintings of these horses prove that they once ranged over an
enormous area. Today, they exist only in captivity.

Red Kangaroo
Red kangaroos are the world's largest marsupials. Despite the name, not all
red kangaroos are red. In the eastern part of their range, males are usually
some shade of red and females are blue-gray; elsewhere, both sexes may be
reddish brown. Male kangaroos are called "boomers," female kangaroos are "blue
fliers," and young are called "joeys." Red kangaroos are found primarily in
the dry grasslands and plains of central Australia. The terrain in this region
consists of savannah-like grasses interspersed with barren areas of dry dirt,
sand, and the occasional rock. Kangaroos prefer open areas, with a sparse
scattering of native bushes and trees for shade. Kangaroos are semi-nomadic,
and their movements are not restricted by most types of fencing.

Reindeer
Immortalized as Santa Claus' beasts of burden, reindeer have been domesticated
for more than 2000 years. Reindeer live in arctic and sub-artic regions,
predominately in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Russia, though they have also
been introduced in North America. They are well adapted to arctic tundra and
the rugged evergreen forest that borders it. The species that reindeer belong
to are well-known for their marathon-like migrations, which they undertake to

Sable Antelope
The beautiful sable antelope can be found in wooded savannah regions of
Africa, south of the equator. This antelope is large and well-built, often
weighing over 600 pounds. The short glossy coat of the male antelope tends to
be black, while the female's coat is generally a lighter chestnut color. Both
males and females have distinctive white markings on their face, chests,
bellies and inner legs. Sable antelopes have large ears, short manes and long
tails with tufted tips. Their heads are crowned with long, ridged,
scimitar-like horns, with those of the males being longer and having a more
pronounced curve than those of the females.

White Bengal Tiger
All known white tigers are descendents of a white Bengal tiger named "Mohan,"
captured in 1951 in India. The white coloration is the result of a double
recessive gene. The white tigers are not albinos; they have chocolate stripes
and blue eyes, although several variations in eye and stripe color have been
seen. White Bengal tigers are extremely rare in the wild: no sightings of
white tigers have been reported in India since the capture of Mohan, and only
about a dozen sightings were reported in the 50 years before that.

Yeti
The word "yeti" is believed to have come from the Sherpa phrase "yeh-teh",
meaning "rock thing." Yeti are large anthropoid creatures, covered by fur that
is generally white. Their faces and chests are hairless, their heads are
elongated and slightly pointed, and they have long arms. Depending on region,
yeti can range from about five and a half feet to almost eight feet tall.
These animals weigh anywhere from 440 to 800 pounds, with males weighing more
than the females. Yeti inhabit remote mountain forest habitats, living at
altitudes of up to 20,000 feet. There are small populations of yeti scattered
across Asia, ranging from China, the Himalayas and on up into the former
Soviet Union to Siberia.
