Description: In several parts of the world the European rabbit is known for the damage and depredation. It was introduced into Britain by the Normans, and introduced from there by settlers into Australia and New Zealand. Once introduced in the wild its numbers increased and livestock pastures and crops were devastated. In Australia, the near extinction of several types of marsupials can be attributed to competition with rabbits. European rabbits can be prolific breeders. One doe can produce up to thirty young in a single breeding season.

European Rabbit

In several parts of the world the European rabbit is known for the damage and
depredation. It was introduced into Britain by the Normans, and introduced
from there by settlers into Australia and New Zealand. Once introduced in the
wild its numbers increased and livestock pastures and crops were devastated.
In Australia, the near extinction of several types of marsupials can be
attributed to competition with rabbits. European rabbits can be prolific
breeders. One doe can produce can produce up to thirty young in a single
breeding season.

                                                                The European
rabbit can be active at any time of the day or night. It lives in groups with
a highly organized social structure. Dominant does and bucks occupy the whole
territory, while subordinates are restricted to smaller areas. Territories are
marked by secreations from a gland under the chin and the anal glands, and by
urine.

In Europe, foxes and stoats are among the main predators of adult rabbits;
younger rabbits are vulnerable to a wider range of predators. Alarm signals
are provided by the rabbit's flashing white tail when it runs, and by thumping
with the feet both above and below ground. Their long, stong hindlegs are
ideal for rapid running. Their natural agility, protective coloring, keen
sense of smell, and long mobile ears with acute hearing are this Lagomorphs
main defenses.
