Description: Panthera spelaea, sometimes classified as a subspecies of the modern African Lion. This lion species lived in Europe, and also spread to China and Siberia. It was significantly larger than modern African Lions, and is sometimes regarded as the biggest cat that ever lived, at least of the species more closely related to modern cats.
The first of the lion lineage (the Giant Lion) occurred in West Africa 750 000 years ago, and by 250 000 years ago lions had spread to Eurasia, becoming a European Species, the Cave Lion.
