Locust

The Locust is a curious insect that travels in HUGE swarns, eating all the
plants they find in their way.Studies of cold hardiness and its evolutionary
mechanism for insects are very important to understand evolutionary process,
pest forecast and integrated pest management. The migratory locust Locusta
migratoria L. is the most important research object in our lab, which is a
widespread agriculture pest in China with a comparatively broad geographic
distribution that includes both temperate and tropical climatic zones.
Frequent local outbreaks of this locust in China in recent years reflect
global climate changes, prolonged drought and changes in land use. Although
there has been considerable research on various aspects of the biology of this
species, there is not much information on its cryobiology. Locusts spend
winter in an inactive egg stage, which takes more than 6-7 months of the year
in temperate regions. The ability to withstand cold is nonetheless essential
for egg survival in winter. Therefore, the egg stage is a critical period of
the locust life cycle, and the cold hardiness of locust¡¯s egg is a long
ignored area of investigation that requires urgent investigation. Is there any
divergence in cold hardiness among the geographic populations is another
question we want to answer. Egg cold hardiness was examined derived from
different geographic populations (from latitude 18¡ã23'N to 41¡ã10'N). The
northern population was more cold hardy than the southern population, and the
two mid-latitude populations was enhanced to various degrees by short-term
cold acclimation at 0¡æ and 5¡æ. For most populations, a 2-day acclimation
period seemed to be optimal.

Exhibit Construction:

Number of animals allowed per exhibit: 2-6 with 12 squares for each adult.

Exhibit size (for 2 adults): 24 grid squares

Terrain (for exhibit with 24 grid squares):
14 Dirt, 4 Sand, 5 Savannah Grass, 1 Fresh Water

Foliage (for exhibit with 24 grid squares):
2 grid squares should contain foliage.
Foliage that would give the most happiness: Palm Tree
Since this is a small plant, greatest happiness will occur
if each of the 2 grid squares contains 4 of this plant.

Rocks (for exhibit with 24 grid squares):
9 Small Rock - Small, which is its most liked rock.
