Red Howler Monkey
The red howler monkey (Alouatta seniculus) is the largest of the nine howler
monkey species, reaching a length of 50 inches (half of which is tail) and a
weight of 15 to 20 pounds. It lives in troops of 5 to 40 animals, led by a
dominant male. They are most active in the morning and evening hours, foraging
slowly in the middle levels of the rainforest canopy for food, which is
comprised of almost entirely leaves, although nuts, seeds and fruits are
eaten. The red howler monkey is a selective feeder, carefully mixing young
tender shoots with older, more nutritious leaves. They have a prehensile tail
to aid in climbing.
