Golden Lion Tamarin
The golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia) is critically endangered,
primarily due to loss of habitat. Until 1960, its striking golden color made
it a target to be captured for exhibition in zoos and for the exotic pet
trade. This practice still continues illegally. It needs primal rainforest and
is adversely affected by human presence. The golden lion tamarin inhabits
only a small stretch of coastal rainforest in southeastern Brazil. It does
breed well in captivity, however, and attempts to supplement wild populations
have met with success.
