Japanese Macaque
The Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) or snow monkey, which is found in the
forests, highlands and mountains of Japan, has the most northern range of any
non-human primate. Japanese macaques live in "troops," usually made up of 20
to 30 individuals, but sometimes including over 100. Each troop is lead by a
dominant male. Japanese macaques have strong social bonds, especially among
females. Males disperse from the troop around the time that they reach sexual
maturity and transfer among troops throughout their lives. Females usually
remain in the same troop for life, with daughters inheriting the "rank" in the
troop that their mother enjoyed. A major constraint on troop size is food
availability. They are primarily frugivores, but also eat seeds, young leaves
and flowers, insects, and tree bark. They are adaptable in diet due to
seasonal changes in the abundance of food in the temperate habitat they
inhabit. In northern regions of Japan, where seasonal climate changes are most
severe, Japanese macaques may need to rely on stores of fat for survival due
to lack of available food. For macaques living in the southern Japan where
seasonal weather changes are not as dramatic, fruit is available year round
and is the primary food source.
