Cetiosaurus
Cetiosaurus ("Whale Lizard") was the first sauropod discovered and given a
scientific name. However, scientists first thought that the fossils belonged
to a whale or large reptile and thus the name. When Cetiosaurus was finally
recognized as a dinosaur, it was placed in its correct taxonomic position, but
kept the name Whale Lizard.
