Echidna
There are two species of spiny anteater, and this one is the larger. It has a
round body covered with fur and spines, and a remarkable curved snout that is
little wider than a pencil. It's legs are short, and its feet have powerful
claws. Spiny anteaters are good diggers, and use their claws to break open the
nests of ants and termites, before sweeping them up with their long toungues.
During the breeding season, the females lay between one and three eggs, which
they incubate inside a temporary pouch. When the young hatch, they stay in the
pouch for up to eight weeks, when their spines begin to develop.
