Description: Bobcats are found throughout North America from southern Canada to southern Mexico. In the United States, population densities are much higher in the southeastern region than in the western states, but at least a small population has been reported in every state. A smaller cousin of the Mountain Lion, Bobcats range in size from 25" - 42" (65-105cm) long with an average weight of 9 - 33 lbs ( 4 to 15 kg). Their fur can range in color from a pale buff to a very dark gray (almost black), with dark brown or black stripes and spots on some parts of the body. The tip of the tail and the backs of the ears are black. They have short ear tufts, and ruffs of hair on the side of the head, giving the appearance of sideburns. Bobacts get their name from their very short tails, which average in length from 4" - 7.5" (11 - 19 cm).
