Description: The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), lives primarily in freshwater swamps and marshes, but also in rivers, lakes and smaller bodies of water in the southeastern United States. They construct burrows for shelter and hibernation when the seasonal temperatures fall. The alligator also hollows out large, open pools called "alligator holes" with its tail and snout. In the dry season, these may dry out, forcing the alligator to migrate across land to find water.
