Description: The Iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus) is one of the many subspecies of wolves found worldwide. The Iberian wolf should not be confused with the Spanish wolf (Canis lupus deitanus) which is now extinct.

By the late 1980s, the Iberian wolf was already scarce, with about 2,000 known individuals left. Most of these wolves now live near highly populated areas in northern Spain. This as led to a change in their diet, with scavenging being the main feeding activity today. Only a few populations that still live in mostly undisturbed ecosystems, conserve their original feeding habits.

Physically, the Iberian wolf has a long face with a pointed muzzle and short, rigid. triangular ears. Its eyes are triangular with a golden or amber color. The legs are long and strong, with the dark markings on the front legs being deep black in color, hence the name signatus. The shade of the coat varies seasonally. It is lighter, silkier and less full than the in winter, when the coat is of a darker gray or reddish color.

Since the Iberian wolf is in grave danger of extinction, Iberian wolves are being bred in captivity in Spain, with the goal to reintroducing them in the wild. Information on this wolf is also available in Spanish. These animals will add interest to any zoo.
