Description: The word flamingo comes from the Latin word for flame. On the Rift Lakes of East Africa, flocks of lesser flamingos commingle with greater flamingos. They coexist without competing due to different feeding strategies. Lesser flamingos are generally white with pink and black feathers on their wings and a black beak. They share their long, graceful necks and legs of other flamingos. They reach an average height of forty inches, making them the shortest of the flamingo species. These animals will add interest to any zoo.
