Description: The Ground Parrot is entirely terrestrial and largely nocturnal. It roosts (singly) by day in dense vegetation (on the ground) and is very secretive and elusive. This bird tends only to be encountered when it is flushed from its hiding place. Its presence is best detected by its calls. Thought to pair for life and defend permanent territories, the Ground Parrot is a highly specialised bird and is dependent on a precise fire regime. Its distribution, therefore, is highly fragmented. Ground Parrots are green to greenish-yellow in color... with the sexes being very much alike. Their breeding season is from September through December. The usual nesting site is a a well-hidden shallow saucer of plant stems and leaves on or near the ground lined with chewed stalks and leaves. In wet situations the nest may be built on a raised platform in a tussock. The role of the sexes in the nesting cycle is unknown. A typical clutch consists of 3 - 4 white eggs which hatch after 21 days. The young usually fledge at around 25 days after hatching, and are sexually mature at around 12 months. Their diet consists of green shoots, and the seeds of various grasses and herbs. A favored seed is the seeds of Button Grass.

Parrot
All parrots share a number of distinctive features. The most obvious of these
is the characteristic parrot bill which consists of a downward-curving and
somewhat hooked upper mandible which fits neatly over a smaller,
upward-curving lower mandible. The feet of parrots are also unusual. The two
outer toes of the foot point backwards and grip in opposition to the two
forward pointing inner toes, providing them with an extremely powerful grasp,
enabling them to hold and manipulate objects close to their bill. Most parrots
are tree-dwellers, and they tend to be most plentiful in and around lowland
tropical forests.
