Description: The Pygmy Hippo is much less aquatic than its giant relative and has a smaller head and longer legs. It lives near water, but stays on land for much of the time, feeding at night on leaves, swamp vegetation, fallen fruit, and roots and tubers which it digs up. Usually alone, except for breeding pairs and young, it occupies a territory, which it defends against rivals. When alarmed, it seeks shelter in dense cover or in the water. Rare over almost all its range, the pygmy hippo might have become extinct in some areas. The population has suffered due to excessive hunting combined with destruction of large areas of its forests habitats. These animals will provide interest to any zoo.
