Description: The most widespread pinniped, the Common or Harbour Seal has a plump body and a small, cat-like head with a slight forehead and nostrils that form a V-shaped pattern. Its coat ranges from light to dark grey or brown, and has spots, rings and blotches all over. The breeding season varies regionally, and the pups are able to crawl and swim almost within an hour of birth. There are at least five subspecies of Common Seal.
