Description: The Abdim's storks (Ciconia abdimii) are glossy black with a white belly, which you often can't see very good. The bill and legs are dull grey and they have a bare blue face. They can be found in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and in the northern parts of South Africa. Abdim's storks mainly live in high grassland and in the semi-arid Kalahari, they can also be seen in the savannah and in cultivated lands. By day they forage in open veld, walking slowly and gathers around in water. In flocks of several hundred birds they fly through the land. As Abdim's storks are very gregarious, they also root in huge numbers in trees or on cliffs at night. Their call is usually very silent. They soar well, often to great hights, sometimes descending swiftly with swerving flight and half-closed wings to suitable feeding grounds, where they mainly look for larger insects but also for frogs, lizards, newts, young snakes, mice, small crawfish and fish. Their nest looks like a platform of sticks placed in a tree or on the roof of a house. The incubation time is about 31 days and they lay two to three eggs. Next to the three other six Ciconia storks they are the only species in that group. In zoos they get mainly fed with fish or mice. In exhibits together with other African savannah animals they also feel well. Holding them together with rhinoceroses, gazelles, zebras and especially with hippopotamuses and flamingos isn't a problem.
