Animal Type: grizzly

Grizzly Bear

The mighty grizzly bear evolved about one million years ago, probably from the
black bear family. Grizzlies, or brown bears, are one of the largest North
American mammals. In some areas, male grizzlies can reach weights of up to
1,800 pounds, but those found in the lower 48 states do not generally weigh
more than 600 pounds. The grizzly has a hump of muscle on its shoulders and
thick, shaggy fur that is sometimes tipped with silver ends. This fur can be a
variety of colors: black, cinnamon, red, or blond. The grizzly is not a
climber. Instead, their claws are well adapted to digging for food, such as
roots and rodents.

Hippopotamus

"Hippopotamus" is the Greek word for "river-horse," a name that aptly
describes these large, semi-aquatic mammals. On land, this animal is second
only to the elephant in size, and the size of its mouth is second only to that
of the whale. Unique among land animals, the hippo can open its jaw a full 180
degrees, thereby creating its distinctive yawn.

Ibex

The alpine ibex is an extraordinarily nimble goat that lives high in the
mountains of central Europe. It is found near the snow line in the Alps and in
other mountainous regions, at elevations of 6,500 to 11,500 feet. Once hunted
almost to extinction, this animal was saved by the Italian royal game
preserves. It has now been reintroduced to much of its former range.

Animal Type: jaguar

Jaguar

The jaguar ranks after the lion and the tiger in size, making it the third
largest cat in the world. In appearance, the jaguar greatly resembles the
leopard, although it is larger and stockier in build, with a shorter tail.
Another way to differentiate between the two species is by the pattern of the
coat: the jaguar's markings consist of dark rings surrounding a lighter area
containing several dark spots. As with leopards, there are also black jaguars.

Animal Type: javrhino

Javan Rhinoceros

The Javan rhino (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is the rarest of the world's large
mammals. Javan rhinos are very large indeed - up to ten feet long, five feet
high and weighing as much as two tons. Loose folds of dusky gray skin give the
appearance of armor plating. The skin is hairless and consists of polygonal
disks that resemble the scales of a reptile. Although Javan rhinos have small
eyes and poor vision, their wide nostrils and erect ears give them acute
senses of smell and hearing.

Lion

The lion is the largest African carnivore. The native habitat of the lion is
the wide savannah of central and southern Africa. This region's wide swaths of
tall grasses provide excellent coverage for lions on the hunt, and the
occasional tree provides shade for resting lions. The lion spends over 20
hours a day resting, usually in the shade of trees or rocks. However, the lion
is a very athletic cat, capable of impressively long and high leaps. They are
also terrific climbers.

Animal Type: lochness

Loch Ness Monster

The Loch Ness Monster is one of the most famous undiscovered animals in the
world. In Scotland it is fondly known as Nessie. This aquatic animal (or its
ancestors) is said to have lived in Loch Ness, Britain's largest freshwater
lake, for over two thousand years. The earliest evidence of Nessie's existence
are standing stones found in the area of the lake. These stones contain Pict
carvings, dating back to the first century AD. The carvings show a swimming
beast with a serpentine body, long beak, flippers in place of feet, and a long
tail - a creature resembling no known animal. Later, Scottish folklore warned
children that a malevolent water creature might try to lure them into the
depths of the lake with promises of a ride on its back, only to drown the
children once they left shore. The earliest written record of Nessie dates
from 565 AD, when Saint Columba is described as saving a man from a large sea
serpent that had crawled out of the lake.

Animal Type: gorilla

Lowland Gorilla

Gorillas are the largest primates, weighing up to 400 pounds. There are three
subspecies of gorillas: the eastern lowland gorilla, the western lowland
gorilla, and the mountain gorilla. The eastern lowland gorilla is endangered,
with a population of only 3,000 to 8,000 individuals. Although the western
lowland gorilla is the most numerous of the subspecies, its survival is still
threatened, and only a few hundred mountain gorillas remain. The eastern
lowland gorilla is blacker in color than the mountain gorilla and has shorter
hair, a longer face, and a broader chest than the western lowland gorilla. In
all three subspecies, the male gorillas develop silver backs as they mature.

male polar bear from the Baltimore Zoo. Magnet has been a favorite among
visitors of all ages since his arrival to Baltimore in 1990. Born at the

Animal Type: tapir

Malaysian Tapir

The Malayan tapir (Tapirus indicus) is native to Burma, Thailand, the
Indochinese peninsula, and Sumatra. This ungulate (hooved) mammal is also
known as the somset and the mu-nam (water pig). Water pig is an appropriate
name for this very large but harmless animal. Tapirs have the body shape of a
huge pig, with a stumpy tail and a snout that resembles that of an anteater.
The largest females have been known to weigh as much as 800 pounds and some
have grown to be 4 feet tall and 8 feet long.

Animal Type: mandrill

Mandrill

Biologist Charles Darwin called the mandrill the most vividly colored specimen
in mammaldom. These large monkeys have white eyelids, blue cheeks, red noses,
yellow beards, and lilac-colored rumps. Male mandrills are twice the size of
females, ranging between 50 and 90 pounds, and their colorful markings become
much brighter when they reach sexual maturity. Their size and their long
canine teeth make the adult male mandrill the most formidable of any monkey.
