Arctic foxes live in family social groups and construct homes called dens. Some of these dens have been used by many different generations and may be centuries old. The paws of Arctic foxes are covered in dense fur during the winter and part of their scientific name is lagopus which means ?rabbit footed?. Furry paws act like snow shoes helping to stop the fox sinking in deep snow and also protect the foot from the intense cold.

and various islands. They are also found north of Finland and Norway.  Arctic
foxes live in family social groups and construct homes called dens. Some of
these dens have been used by many different generations and may be centuries

part of their scientific name is lagopus which means ?rabbit footed'. Furry
paws act like snow shoes helping to stop the fox sinking in deep snow and also
protect the foot from the intense cold.  Arctic foxes are what we call
opportunistic feeders, which means that they will eat almost anything, alive
or dead. They prefer to eat small mammals but will feed on insects, berries,
sea birds, fish and carrion (animals that have died). They will also scavenge
on the remains of kills of other animals. In the summer when there is plenty
of food available, Arctic foxes collect surplus food, carry it back to the den
and store it under stones for later use.  The Arctic Fox is 65-85 cm.long and
weighs 2.5-5.0 kilograms. Their height is 28 cm.
