Description: The Asiatic Cheetah - Acinonyx venaticus, was hunted to near extinction by the European and Asian royalty. Their beautiful pelt was a symbol of wealth and was worn proudly. Although the pelt was not coveted as that of the Leopard, these cats were almost completely destroyed.

The Asiatic Cheetah was formerly widespread across Southwest Asia, but is now found only in the Kavir desert region of Iran, where its numbers are estimated at just 30-60.

It's habitat consists of desert, much of it with precipitation of fewer than 100 mm per year. The terrain ranges from plains and saltpans to eroded foothills, and rugged desert ranges that rise to an elevation of up to 2,000-3,000 m. The vegetation, if any, consists of a sparse cover of shrubs, most less than one meter tall. Gazelles were preferred prey but they have now become scarce through over-hunting and replacement by livestock. Cheetahs are generally solitary or may occur in small groups as mother and cubs or male coalitions.

The Asiatic cheetah is threatened indirectly by loss of prey base through human hunting activities, and directly because it is considered to be a threat to livestock.
