Description: Related to the kangaroos, this wallaby is medium gray to reddish on the upper par of the body with a pronounced reddish-brown neck. The lower half is white to pale gray. The muzzle, paws, and largest toe are black with a white stripe on the upper lip.Males weigh 15-23.7 kg and the smaller females weight 12-15.5 kg.This species is protected by law in its native range but may be killed under license as a pest of crops and pastures.
Wallabies are marsupials, meaning that their young (called joeys) are born not completely developed. Upon birth the blind and naked young make their way to the mother's pouch where they will begin to suckle and finish their development.
A female gives birth after a gestation of approximately 33 days. Once the young reaches the pouch, it will live there for approximately 280 days. During this time, the offspring may be seen with a part of its body sticking out of the pouch. This will usually begin with a leg or tail until the joey rights itself and the head emerges. A joey will be completely furred by the time the head protrudes from the pouch at 5 months of age. After a joey emerges from the pouch, it will continue to nurse until it is 12-17 months old. Bennett's wallabies exhibit what is called embryonic diapause. A female may become pregnant at the end of a breeding season but will not give birth until the following breeding season. This is a solitary animal but may be seen in large groups when feeding. Bennett's Wallabies are primarily nocturnal.
When confined to smaller areas, a group of females will get along but males become aggressive towards one another.
Wallabies may become easily startled. Animal care personnel take care to make certain their presence is known and to give the animals adequate room to move away. These wallabies have a very strong tail as with other species in their family. However, they do not use it often to stand on as the larger kangaroos do. Found in coastal woodlands and open forest of South Eastern Australia, Tasmania and the surrounding islands.
