Description: Guanacos are native to South America and can be found at altitudes ranging from sea level in Tierra del Fuego to 4000 m. along the Andes of Northern Chile, Peru and Argentina. The environment that they inhabit range from the Atacama Desert to the snow capped wind swept peaks of Patagonia
Like the Llama and Alpaca, the guanaco belongs to the same family, Camlidaeare. The Guanaco and Vicuna look very similar with a uniform color but the Guanaco is bigger and similar in size to the Llama
Like the camel, the guanaco can survive for long periods of time in the desert without drinking. They are herbivores and eat both grasses and plants
Guanacos usually inhabit grass and shrub lands from anywhere between sea level and 5500 m. in altitude. They sometimes spend the winter in forests, although this is not common. These animals will add interest to any zoo.
