Description: This is one of the strangest members of the cat family, the only one which significantly departs from the typical 'cat' body design. The Jaguarundi most closely resembles a weasel or otter, hence its other name, Otter Cat. It fills the same ecological niche as the raccoon, weasel, otter, or stoat, and occasionally has territorial clashes with them. Jaguarundis live in Central America and northern South America. They used to live across much of the southern United States but have been exterminated across most of it. A small population survives in Texas, but the habitat is not protected and continues to be cleared. These animals will add interest to any zoo.
