Spectacled Bear

The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is a small bear with cream-colored
facial markings around its eyes, which give it its name. Like the North
American black bear, the main fur color of the spectacled bear is variable,
ranging from black to brown, sometimes with a red tinge. Females weigh about
150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. The spectacled bear is the only
bear native to South America. It is the sole surviving member of the
Tremarctinae, a sub-family of bears that inhabited North and South America
during the last Ice Age and which included the great short-faced bear,
Arctodus simus.
