I am assuming that the top left page "login and password" section must be entered manually each time for a "spam" protection. This is because my automatic "remember me" login with IE8 keeps coming up "password incorrect".

I wish you could change this for established members, as it is a hazzle having to login in manually each time and I don't like the option of staying logged in all the time. :eggsad

We did not write this forum software and there are no settings associated with that "login and password" section. As far as I know, this forum software does not do anything that would prevent a browser from remembering login information, although I do not know for sure. The current version of the forum software was written before IE8. So there might be some type of incompatibility. I know there is a definite incompatibility with IE8 concerning making long posts. I am using IE8 and, in order to get around that problem, I have to click IE8's Compatibility icon that is to the right of the address box. You can try that to see if it helps you. As with all other IE versions, IE8 is buggy. For example, it does not remember that Compatability setting if you clear IE8's history. If that Compatability icon does not help, you can try using the LOGIN in the menu or the Login at the bottom of the screen to see if the "remember me" works any better with those.

I assume the "remember me" feature of the browser works for you at other sites. If it does not work anywhere, you might have to turn it on at the end of Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom Level.

Personally, I do not use the "remember me" of a browser and I do not use the "staying logged in all the time" feature, because I feel neither are secure. But from a technical perspective, there isn't much difference between the 2. The "staying logged in all the time" feature works by using a "Cookie" on your computer, which is just a tiny file with information about this site that only this site could use and no other site. The "remember me" of a browser is also saved in a file on your computer. If you use the "staying logged in all the time" feature, your name only appears in the online list for 30 minutes since the last time you clicked something at the site. But you would still be considered logged in when you next click something at the site.

I am just reporting the bugs that I have on the site. I am not saying the forum is flawed. I only know that this IE8 remember me and password work everywhere except here...with or without cookies enabled or cleared every time.

Also, after logged in, and clicking on the "Show new replies to your posts.", It doesn't show any...just like now, when I had to go to the main page to see that you posted a reply to my last one.

Respectfully,
John

It does look like that is a flaw in this version of the forum software. It looks like sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I do not know specifically what is causing that problem. Thanks for letting us know, since we can check that when new versions of the forum software come out.

Just to clarify the error I get when logging in at the top of the page, this is the screen that appears, and then I have to login again...then it logs me in. And, for the second login, it doesn't matter if it's at the top or this error screen, it logs me in for either entry. Weird.

And just to add: When posting an upload here, and choosing preview, it doesn't show the upload in the preview box. So, you just have to guess and change it after posting with edit. I hope that can be changed.

The forum software cannot show the image in the preview because the forum software does not have that image until you post. Then the image is uploaded. That should be true for attachments at any forum site. However, you should be able to see the image on your computer. When you click Browse, a small window appears in order for you to select the file you want to upload. That small window is on your computer and is created by your browser. There is an icon in that small window that lets you change the view. By default, the view shows only a list of files. If you change the view to Thumbnails, then you will see thumbnails for all of the images shown in that small window.

Why can some members log in anonymously, but  I don't have that option?  :giggle

erm...  good question - no idea if i have that option on this board :sorry :duh

By default, everyone will be seen in the online status unless a webmaster changes that for a specific individual, based on a request from that individual. However, fern has decided it is okay if everyone has the ability to do that for themselves. So I have turned on that capability. If you do not want to be seen in the online status, you would click PROFILE in the menu near the top of the page, click "Account Related Settings" in the menu on the left, click in the box to the right of "Show others your online status?" so that the checkmark is removed, enter your password in the "Current Password" box, and click "Change profile". To allow the online status to show you again, you would do the same thing again, by adding the checkmark back in the box.

Thanks for clearing that up Jay.  :smile1 :chick3 :eggsmile :egggrin

I thought instead of making a new topic, I'd post this here. I have not been able to login using the login screen with my remembered username and password. It always goes to that box "password is incorrect" when it's not. Then I put in my same password and it logs me in. If I don't erase my login password from the initial login screen and actually type in the password, I always get that error message. It's frustrating.

Also, In the last week, I have not been able to check unread posts from my last login as it comes up none. When I try to check here for any unread topics, it also comes up blank. Now I have to go through that read most recent post highlight at the bottom...which I don't care for because I want to read the new posts' topics in the general form as "check unread messages from last login". Any suggestions here other than just going through each section individually?

Signed,

Perplexed, frustrated, discombobulated, and altogether confused.    :giggle

I do not use the "Show unread posts since last visit". In fact, I have that entire box turned off. (At the far right of the "Hello" line at the top, there is a "-" or "+". Clicking the "-" turns off that box and the "-" changes to "+". Clicking the "+" turns the box on.) Instead, I use the main index page. There is an icon to the left of each Board on that page. That icon is highlighted whenever that Board has a new post in it since the last time I was in that Board. For Child Boards, the name of the Child Board will be highlighted if that Child Board has a new post in it since the last time I was in that Child Board. By using that approach, I saw you had a new post in this Questions Board because the icon was highlighted to the left of "Questions" on the main index page.

I do not have any suggestions concerning having the browser remembering the name and password. As I mentioned earlier in this topic, I feel that feature of browsers is not secure. There have been updates made to the forum software, but we have not installed any of those updates. I do not know if any of those updates would help either of these problems, since the summary of each update is not very descriptive. We are hesitant of installing updates because we worry that updates might fix one thing, but accidentally cause a major security problem elsewhere.

:TY much for your input here Jay. I will take a look at those highlighted areas more closely from now on!!  :TY :cheers
