Description: The Rhesus Macaque is among the most common monkeys in India. It is highly intelligent and has learned to adapt to almost all habitats. These range from near-desert to thick jungles, even mountains above the snowline at 2,500m. In India, where they are considered sacred and left unthreatened, they live successfully in agricultural and even urbanised areas. More than half of the Rhesus Macaques in Uttar Pradesh of Northern India live in cities and towns, raiding cultivated areas and rubbish dumps. In fact, they often become so fearless of humans that they can be a pest or even a danger to humans.
