Description: Red ruffed lemurs are restricted to the forests of the Masoala Peninsula near Maroantsetra in northeastern Madagascar. They have been seen just east of the Antainambalana River, which divides their range from that of the black and white ruffed lemurs. The only protected area that contains red ruffed lemurs, the Masoala Nature Reserve, permits logging within the reserve boundaries. Deforestation in this region is a major threat to the survival of red ruffed lemurs, and hunting and trapping of these animals for food has dramatically reduced their numbers. These animals provide interest to any zoo.
