Description: The desert bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis nelsoni) ranges from Nevada and California to west Texas and south into Mexico. It lives in dry, desert mountain ranges and foothills. In the winter they range farther from their meager water sources to browse on vegetation in full leaf. Desert bighorns eat a variety of desert plants, such as the tender shoots of prickly pear cactus, and eat grass and the flowers of succulents like Agave when these foods are available.

Desert Bighorn Sheep

The desert bighorn sheep (Ovis Canadensis nelsoni) ranges from Nevada and
California to west Texas and south into Mexico. It lives in dry, desert
mountain ranges and foothills. In the winter they range farther from their
meager water sources to browse on vegetation in full leaf. Desert bighorns eat
a variety of desert plants, such as the tender shoots of prickly pear cactus,
and eat grass and the flowers of succulents like agave when these foods are
available. They use their hooves and horns to remove spines from cacti, then
eat the juicy insides. They get most of their moisture from vegetation,
although they still visit water holes every few days in summer. When summer
temperatures become extreme and water sources dry up completely, Desert
Bighorns rest most of the daylight hours under rock overhangs or other shade
and feed at night to avoid water loss. They also move closer to remaining
water supplies. The desert bighorn is somewhat smaller and has flatter,
wider-spreading horns than the alpine variety.
