Description: The European bison (Bison bonasus), also referred to as the wisent, is closely related to the American bison. Extinct in the wild by the early 1900s due to overhunting, the wisent once ranged from the British Isles to Siberia. It has been reintroduced in two dozen forests around Europe. The largest herd of free-roaming wisent are in the Baloweiza forest on the Polish-Belorussian border.
