Description: From West Australia to Queensland coastal and some inland regions, the Freshwater Crocodile is endemic to Australia. They are found in clear, muddy, shallow, deep, fast or slow running water. They are mainly in wetlands, river, creeks, swamps and freshwater billabongs. They are reasonably salt water tolerant. When the 'Dry Season' starts (April) the Freshwater Croc migrates to across where water is more permanent. They cease to grow and maintain their normal eating pattern. Males reach up to 3 metres and females up to 2 metres. It takes 20 years for juveniles to mature and they sometimes reach 50 years of age, although this figure is rare. Nearly all growth takes place during the Wet Season.

Australian Freshwater Croc

From West Australia to Queensland coastal and some inland regions, the
Freshwater Crocodile is endemic to Australia. They are found in clear, muddy,
shallow, deep, fast or slow running water. They are mainly in wetlands, river,
creeks, swamps and freshwater billabongs. They are reasonably salt water
tolerant. When the 'Dry Season' starts (April) the Freshwater Croc migrates to
across where water is more permanent. They cease to grow and maintain their
normal eating pattern. Some burrow in established holes and wait out part of
the 'Dry Season'. When the 'Wet Season' comes again they seem to automatically
know their way back to good feeding grounds. The middle of the Dry Season is
time for courtship. The Freshwater Crocodile digs holes in sandy river banks,
when materials for making nests are in short supple. Nesting occurs over a 2-3
week period. Feral pigs and lizards are a menace to the eggs laid in the nest.
Incubation period is about 70-80 days and the average clutch is 13. The female
returns about hatching time and the vibration she causes is like a signal to
the eggs. The eggs in turn react and start to break out. This in turn causes
the female to dig away the material around the eggs and assist the young ones.
Temperature determines the sex of the crocodile (as with all Crocodilians).
Many males are produced between 31-32C. The females are favored at higher and
lower temperatures. The average weight for a hatchling is about 42 grams. The
average length is about 24 cm. The Freshwater Crocodile is preyed upon by
birds, crocs, turtles and fish. Less than 1% of the original eggs laid will
survive. Males reach up to 3 metres and females up to 2 metres. It takes 20
years for juveniles to mature and they sometimes reach 50 years of age,
although this figure is rare. Nearly all growth takes place during the Wet
Season.
