Parasaurolophus

Parasaurolophus is a long-crested hadrosaur. These "duck-billed" dinosaurs
lived in herds of at least 30 individuals, with juveniles staying relatively
close to the center. A parasaurolophus' crest is the most prominent feature on
this animal. Measuring nearly 6 feet in length in adult males, this extension
of the nasal cavity makes the hadrosaur easy to tell apart from most other
crested hadrosaurians. The main purpose of this amazing crest is to produce a
deep, low-frequency, foghorn-like sound. Research suggests that this sound is
akin to the ultrasound that elephants make. Study on the crest's other
functions is still in its infancy. Scientists can deduce though, as females
have a remarkably reduced crest, that this predominantly male structure might
also aid in courtship displays. The parasaurolophus' nostrils (at the end of
its snout) go up through the crest and back down it, forming four tubes. Its
snout is narrow and shorter than other hadrosaur snouts. Parasaurolophus also
has a notch in its back, right where the crest would touch the back when its
head leaned backwards.
