Bar Tailed Godwit

The Bar Tailed Godwit, which has the scientific name, Limosa lapponica,
belongs to the Scolopacidae family, which includes sandpipers and other wading
birds.  They are smaller than curlews, but otherwise quite similar, with
fairly long legs, except that the beak, almost as long as a Curlews, but with
a subtle upturn along its length.  They are significantly larger than the
small waders like Dunlins. The length of the adult Bar Tailed Godwit is 37-40
cm (15 inches), with a wingspan of 70-80 cm (about 2.5 feet).  The somewhat
smaller males weigh on average 300 g (10 ounces), while the larger females
average weight is around 450 g (15 ounces).  The scientific genus name comes
from the Latin, limus (mud), and the specific name is taken from Lapland,
where large numbers breed.
