Dire Wolf

The Dire Wolf is the largest canine to have ever exsisted. It was about five
feet long, weighed around 125 to 175 pounds, and roamed North America during
the Ice Age. It became extinct about 14000 BC. About 2000 Dire Wolf fossles
have been found at the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles. Since water and tar
don't mix well, water acumulated at the top, giving the pits the appearance of
a normal water hole. Thats why so many animals get stuck in them. Although
they look similar, the Dire Wolf was more robust than the Grey Wolf, and had a
broader head. The Dire Wolf also had larger teeth, but shorter legs in
relation to its body. The Dire Wolf hunted and scavenged for food, and like
the modern day grey wolf, hunted in packs. It hunted animals like bison and
sloths. Because of its shorter legs, it probobly couldn't run as fast as the
grey wolf. This prehistoric preditor makes a great addition to any zoo, so
adopt one today!
