Description: The Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos tracheliotus), one of the 15 species of Old World vultures, is very large, averaging 40-45 inches long, with a wingspan of 9 feet. They are generally dark brown (almost black) with lappets (flap-like structures) of bare flesh on the side of the head. They have a bare head and neck which is red or pink, and their underparts are covered with white down. The Lappet-faced vulture is found in the desert in Africa, Arabia, and the Near East. They prefer open and arid habitats, and tend to nest in the shortest trees in their range.
