Description: The Mountain Zebra "Equus zebra hartmannae" are found in the deserts and semi-deserts of southwestern Africa in the two mountainous regions. These animals are excellent rock climbers and are much more sure-footed on steep or rugged surfaces than their plains relatives. The mountain zebra is diurnal, with feeding consuming more than half of the day. Their diet consists of grass, bark, leaves, buds and fruits of trees. The mountain zebra prefer small herds led by an adult male and 1-6 females and their young, other males in bachelor herds. These animals will provide interest to any zoo.

                                           The Mountain Zebra "Equus zebra
hartmannae" are found in the deserts and semideserts of southwestern Africa in
the two mountainous regions. These animals are excellent rock climbers and are
much more sure-footed on steep or rugged surfaces than their plains relatives.
The mountain zebra is diurnal, with feeding consuming more than half of the
day. Their diet consists of grass, bark, leaves, buds and fruits of trees. The
mountain zebra prefer small herds led by an adult male and 1-6 females and
their young, other males in bachelor herds. Mountain zebra begin breeding at 2
years of age, usually in the spring. Eleven to 12 months after mating, one
offspring is born and is up on its feet within the hour. They enjoy rolling in
the mud, then let it dry, then shake it off, shedding loose hair and dry skin
along with the mud. The mountain zebra as a species is classified as
endangered.                                                                   
                                                                             
   Mountain Zebra prefrences..  sand, dirt, grass, brownstone, fresh water,
lots of elevation, rocks and the Desert rock. The Khejri Tree, Thorn Acacia
Tree, Tall grass, Quiver Tree, prickly pear cactus, and the Thorn Bush are the
preferred foliage.
