Description: The second largest living reptile, the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) is second only to the saltwater crocodile in size. Nile crocodiles may reach lengths in excess of 20 feet and may weigh over 1500 pounds. They are adapted for an aquatic environment, possessing clear eyelids that enable them to see underwater, flaps of skin that keep water out of their throat and ears, and webbed rear feet that aid in swimming. Being cold-blooded, they regulate body temperature by basking in the sun to heat their body and then returning to the water to cool off. These animals will provide interest to any zoo.

Nile Crocodile

to the water to cool off. Nile crocodiles often lie with their mouth open to
release excess heat, allowing crocodile birds to wander in and ou, picking
food and parasites from their teeth. Nile Crocodiles are found in freshwater
rivers, lakes and waterholes throughout sub-Sahara Africa.
