In the Carnivorous Plant House guests will encounter many of the 600 species of carnivorous plant that exist on planet Earth, defined as attracting and trapping prey, making digestive enzymes to release nutrients that allow the plant to grow in environments such as bogs and pools with few available nutrients. There is lots of information and many activities including interactive simulations of the main types of trap. The carnivorous plants on display include:
pitfall traps such as pitcher plants (Sarracenia, where the leaves form the pitchers and Nepenthes where the pitchers are at the ends of long tendrils), the similar cobra lilies, a bromeliad (Brocchinia, with a pitfall trap formed from tubular leaf bases);
sticky traps including butterworts with sticky leaves that roll slowly inwards over the trapped prey, sundews which have leaves covered with red glandular hairs tipped with a shiny and sticky blob – the leaves may fold over the trapped prey;
snap traps including the well-known Venus flytrap, which has hinged leaves that snap closed in less than a second after an insect touches the trigger hairs in the trap, and the much less well-known waterwheel plant which lives in water and has whorls of much smaller traps, which catch water fleas;
bladder traps found in another aquatic plant, the bladderwort, in which small hollow bladders contain a vacuum so that when a water flea disturbs the trigger, the trap door opens, the vacuum is released and the prey is sucked in;
lobster-pot traps found in a third aquatic plant, the corkscrew plant (Genlisea) which has Y shaped tubular leaves with inward pointing hairs that allow protozoa (mobile single celled organisms) to enter but not to leave.
