At the Ecology Education Centre, zoo guests will be able to have fun experiencing carbon-neutral technologies and biodiversity conservation in action. It features:
a rooftop observation area with a conventional wind turbine;
two Savonius rotor vertical wind turbines;
a solar-electric heat pump that extracts heat from the air to heat the building in winter (the heat pump is blue and the solar panels are purple);
two angled solar thermal water heaters.
In the ground floor are:
displays about conservation and biodiversity protection in gardens, parks, zoos and reserves across the world;
a working overshot waterwheel;
a composting toilet that uses the warmth generated by bacteria in the compost to create an airflow through the toilet and out of the tall chimney, keeping smells and bacteria out of the building;
a reed bed that cleans grey water from sinks and washing machines as well as encouraging a healthy population of wetland animals and plants;
a log burner which provides heat in winter and a cast-iron range the provides hot water and can be used to cook, both burning sustainable timber from around the zoo;
a gift shop selling a beautiful water mill picture, a model windmill to assemble, a model of the cast iron range in the building and a useful solar-electric phone charger.
